What is it about?

We estimated the rate of movement of water from the surface to wells and boreholes using several different techniques. This showed that the water can take decades to reach the water table in the central part of Malta and also possibly a long time to travel in the saturated zone to abstraction points.

Why is it important?

Malta has problems with nitrate concentrations in some wells. The slow travel time through the system means that improvements will take possibly decades to appear in drinking water.
