What is it about?
This was an invited closing article for a special issue on Rasmussen's work. The article is a reminder of Rasmussen's emphasis on balance between work in the field and work in the lab, the importance of both control and generalizability in your research. Penny and I discuss some work from our own labs and how it has been influenced by continually searching for this balance.

Perspectives
This was my first and (to date but hopefully not) only paper with Penny Sanderson. Penny was my PhD supervisor's (Kim Vicente), supervisor and so my academic grandmother. It was a brilliant experience getting to share ideas with her and our thoughts bounced off each other very rapidly. One of my favourite academic experiences so far.
