What is it about?

The goal of the study was to test the drink and harm reduction effects of a novel educational commitment module as a complement to a standard brief motivational interviewing protocol for at-risk college drinkers - the Brief Alcohol Screening and Intervention for College Students (BASICS).

Why is it important?

Modestly larger decreases in drink quantity and frequency were observed in the educational commitment condition at 2 months. However, at 9 months, the BASICS alone condition showed somewhat larger effects than the educational commitment condition. Given the mixed findings and brevity of the educational commitment module, further development of more intensive academic/vocational interventions for at-risk college drinkers is warranted.
