What is it about?

In this publication we have developed a coating over a titanium alloy commoly used for orthopaedic implants. The coating is formed by nanocolumns, which are fully biocompatible with the bone cells but avoid the infection by rejecting the bacteria adhesion and proliferation.

Why is it important?

Thousands of orthopaedic prostheses are retrieved every yeare because of infection. This coating avoids this problem that means a suffering for patients and a burden for the healthcare national systems

Perspectives

This research have been awarded with the IDEA2 prize (MIT-Community of Madrid) for its innovative featrues and its potential to transfer it to the industry. Currently, the technology is patented and a prototype will be prepared in near future to be tested in preclinical trials
