What is it about?
Magnesium is an important but enigmatic element in silicate glasses. Here, we uncover its structural role in an exemplar system by using computer simulation allied with the results obtained from neutron and x-ray diffraction and 25Mg solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) experiments.

Why is it important?
The work bridges the gap between conflicting literature reports on the structural behavior of Mg in silicate glasses by developing an approach that unifies the results obtained from several different experimental probes. The findings are a prerequisite for establishing quantitative structure-property relations for Mg-bearing silicate glasses.
Perspectives
It is wonderful to see the employment of a careful systematic approach bridging the gap between previosly disparate findings on the coordination environment of Mg from diffraction and NMR experiments.
