What is it about?

Hydrogen peroxide is an oxidant. Its history and involvement in biology is reviewed. I show that it is thermodynamically a weak one-electron oxidant and kinetically a slow two-electron oxidant.

Why is it important?

Given its reactivity (thermodynamics and kinetics), hydrogen peroxide at low concentrations is an ideal signalling molecule.

Perspectives

We need to know more about the distribution of hydrogen peroxide in various cells.
