What is it about?

6-phosphofructokinase is a key enzyme that controls activity in glycolysis, an important metabolic pathway. In this study, bacteria of the group Xanthomonas were shown to have a 6-phosphofructokinase. Properties of the enzyme were determined, thereby demonstrating that it employs pyrophosphate as a phosphate donor.

Why is it important?

Presence of a 6-phosphofructokinase indicates that Xanthomonas bacteria might use glycolysis to utilize sugars to grow and obtain energy. Xanthomonas bacteria cause plant diseases worldwide. Understanding better how bacteria utilize plant material like sugars may help reducing the negative impact of bacteria-induced plant diseases.
