What is it about?
Young drivers are at increased risk of being injured or killed in a road crash. However, it can be difficult to measure the factors that are related to a road crash through objective measures such as blood alcohol tests. Therefore, we need to use self report instruments. The Behaviour of Young Novice Drivers Scale (BYNDS) is a self report instrument developed specifically to explore the risky behaviours that young drivers engage in, placing them at increased crash risk. The BYNDS contains 44 items, which may mean increased expense (time and/or money) in survey research. Therefore, this research aimed to develop a shorter, but still reliable, version of the BYNDS.

Why is it important?
The original BYNDS contained 44 items, yet this study revealed that a shorter 36-item scale could effectively measure risky driver behaviour.
Perspectives
Implementing and analysing surveys can be costly, and often surveys contain numerous items and scales, therefore scale parsimony is highly preferred. This project revealed that a 36-item scale can adequately capture risky behaviours that were previously captured via a 44-item scale.
