What is it about?
Manaus, the capital of Amazonas state in Brazil, has experienced rapid urban growth in recent decades, transforming large areas of tropical forest into built-up land. This study analyzes the spatial and temporal patterns of urban expansion in Manaus, examining how and where the city has grown and what environmental consequences have followed. Our findings document the dynamics of urban sprawl and its impacts on the surrounding Amazon landscape, providing a basis for more sustainable urban planning in the region.

Why is it important?
Urban growth in Amazonian cities poses a direct and immediate threat to one of the world's most important ecosystems. By documenting the spatial and temporal dynamics of Manaus's expansion, this study provides critical baseline information for urban planners, environmental managers, and policymakers working to balance development with environmental conservation in the Brazilian Amazon.
Perspectives
Cities in the Amazon represent a unique and underexplored challenge at the interface of urbanization and tropical conservation. This work reflects our interest in understanding how urban growth unfolds in ecologically sensitive regions and what lessons can be drawn for more sustainable city planning in the Brazilian Amazon and beyond.
