What is it about?

The evolution of “Green Chemistry” began in the 1930s in International industries, NOT the 1990s at EPA. This is also the story of the evolution of industrial organic chemistry that began in the 1700s. In recent years the “Field” has broadened toward “Sustainability” and “Systems Thinking”.

Why is it important?

“Green Chemistry” did NOT originate in the 1990s at EPA or in Academia, it actually evolved from complex, international, interdisciplinary efforts, mostly from Industry, beginning in the 1930s. It continues to evolve toward much broader holistic concepts such as “Sustainability” and “Systems Thinking”.

Perspectives

This author was the person who, in 1984, conceived the BHC Ibuprofen process that won one of the earliest US Presidential Green Chemistry Awards and one of the best known examples of “Green Chemistry”, and therefore was a witness to and an early participant in some of the early phases of the evolution of “Green Chemistry”.
