What is it about?
This is a review of mathematical results concerning phase transitions, spontaneous symmetry breaking and critical phenomena in equilibrium statistical mechanics. It is written for theoretical physicists and does not enter into any technical details.

Why is it important?
The importance of this topic is self-evident for all physicists.
Perspectives
The publication covers an area of theoretical physics that I was fascinated by in my younger years. Together with my colleague and friend Thomas C. Spencer and others (including Elliott H. Lieb and Barry Simon), we were able to establish what appear to be really interesting results.
