What is it about?

Land sliding is a proliferated hazard that occurs in hilly areas caused by earthquakes. Unfortunately, during the landslide, the soil loses its shear strength and is undissipated to resist slope failure. A large number of landslides occur in various countries, mostly in hilly areas, particularly in developing countries where the hill infrastructure establishment is in the juvenile stage. Numerous methods have been developed to predict the occurrence of landslides, including the implementation of sensor networks in vulnerable slopes and controlling them using the Internet of Things (IoT) through a network erected from distant locations. This is under study from several landslide sites, including the Nilgiris district of Tamilnadu, which is a landslide-prone area. Soil parameters drastically change during rainfall, which induces landslides, and if they are monitored properly, there is a chance to prevent landslide occurrences in many areas. However, the data to be processed is humongous, and proper implementation of the monitoring process is deemed necessary. The main parameters that create soil failure include pore water pressure, soil slopes, index and engineering properties of soil, and mobilized cohesion force existing in the soil, which vary drastically during prolonged rainfall in the area. Pure water pressure can be monitored using instrumentation in the soil, and it must be processed to obtain any severe variation. In this work, we proposed a networking method using wireless sensor networks and the IoT to protect shallow landslides in the transportation sector of hilly areas.

Perspectives

I hope this article makes what people might think is a boring, slightly abstract area like health economics and measuring things like health, kind of interesting and maybe even exciting. Because the way we spend money on health and social care is not just a problem for politicians, managers and researchers to worry about - it is an issue that touches every single human being on this planet in one way or another. More than anything else, and if nothing else, I hope you find this article thought-provoking.
