What is it about?
The sense of smell (olfacotry sense) detects volatile odors in terrestrial species and water-soluble odors in aquatic species. This review shows similarties and peculiarities of aquatic olfaction compared to terrestrial olfaction. It discusses olfactory receptor families and their evolution, and the olfactory sensory neuron types, in which they are expressed. Amphibians are covered as transition to terrestrial olfaction.
