What is it about?

Southern Greenland contains some of the most ancient crustal rocks known in the world. By studying these rocks and their enclosed mineral deposits, we can learn more about how the earth has evolved over time. In this paper, two different styles of gold mineralization found in ancient volcanic rocks of Greenland are described and their origin is discussed.

Why is it important?

The Tartoq Group volcanic rocks are thought to have formed in an ancient island arc, an environment where gold deposits are forming today. However, the ancient examples presented here show certain differences with today's deposits, which might be linked to differing tectonic and atmospheric conditions in those times.
