Prospective, randomised trial comparing short and long time-interval between preoperative radiotherapy 5x5 Gy and surgery. Short-course preoperative radiotherapy and delayed surgery may be associated with increased risk of local recurrence.

Why is it important?

Optimal time-interval between 5x5 Gy radiotherapy and surgery has not been unequivocally established so far. The study adds to the current knowledge on this topic showing similar overall and disease-free survival but increased risk of local recurrence in individuals operated on 4-5 weeks after the end of radiotherapy.
