What is it about?
This study explains the synthesis, nature and anticancer properties of mono- and dinuclear Ni(II) and Co(II) complexes of a Schiff base ligand (LA) derived from ortho-vanillin and ortho-phenylenediamine. Physicochemical and spectral properties were used to identify the characteristics of the ligand complexes while X-ray crystallography were used for mononuclear nickel(II), Ni(LA). The anticancer activity of these compounds specifically for human colorectal cancer HCT116 has been identified as well.

Why is it important?
Schiff bases and their complexes have been gaining attention mainly due to their unique structures and electronic properties which could be manipulated to enhance significant bioactivity. The differences in the characteristics of LA and its mononuclear and dinuclear Ni(II) and Co(II) complexes as in structural architecture and electronic properties have been studied. It is highlighted that the anticancer properties of Ni(II) complexes prevails that of Co(II) complexes.
