What is it about?

“ALL YOU NEED IS LOVE” is a 6-week patient-directed intervention to promote disease knowledge, self-management, transition readiness, and self-advocacy among adolescents with chronic kidney disease. The current study compared outcomes for adolescents who underwent the “ALL YOU NEED IS LOVE” education only intervention and adolescents who underwent the “ALL YOU NEED IS LOVE” education plus mindfulness intervention. Adolescents in both intervention groups showed significant improvements in disease knowledge, self-management, transition readiness, self-advocacy, and mindfulness. There were no significant differences in outcomes by intervention type, suggesting that the mindfulness training may not be a necessary addition to the base “ALL YOU NEED IS LOVE” education intervention.

Why is it important?

Findings suggest that the base “ALL YOU NEED IS LOVE” education intervention is sufficient for improving disease knowledge, self-management, transition readiness, self-advocacy, and mindfulness among adolescents with chronic kidney disease. Further, utilization of the “ALL YOU NEED IS LOVE” education intervention (6 sessions over 6 weeks for 15 minutes each; 90 minutes total) would contribute to less patient burden compared to the “ALL YOU NEED IS LOVE” education plus mindfulness intervention (6 sessions over 6 weeks for 25 minutes each; 150 minutes total). The patient-directed nature of the “ALL YOU NEED IS LOVE” education intervention additionally decreases burden on pediatric providers. Due to the fact that self-management and adherence are of the utmost importance for improved health outcomes among adolescents with chronic kidney disease, the “ALL YOU NEED IS LOVE” education intervention is an important contribution to the field and has the potential to have widespread positive impacts on physical and mental health outcomes for these individuals, while minimizing patient and provider burden.
