What is it about?

The brain area that normally processes touch sensations associated with the fingertips is found to respond differently when only looking at object with rough and smooth appearance

Why is it important?

The visual-somatosensory crossmodal network we identify may facilitate action planning as it allows to predict how an object will feel, and hence infer how much force should be applied for example to grasp the object.

Primary sensory areas are thought to be responding only to information to their primary modality. Here we show how this compartmental view of the brain might not give us the full picture.
