What is it about?

Imazaquin is a herbicide that is used to post the production of food by eliminating unwanted weeds. However, the main pitfall associated with its use is the impact on the environment. This study examines the insertion of this compound inside molecular capsules, cucurbit[n]urils, that may inspire future formulations that allow better action of the compound while reducing its negative impact on the environment.

Why is it important?

The use of herbicides has a negative impact on the environment and mankind's health. This work demonstrates the introduction of a molecular capsule that contains imazaquin, a herbicide, into its cavity. This will lead to the protection of the herbicide from degradation which leads to the formation of more toxic metabolites and will allow control of its release thereby increasing its efficacy.

Perspectives

This work could act as a base study for the production of a herbicide formulation that will benefit farmers and will have a reduced negative impact on the environment.
