What is it about?
There is a lack of methods investigating the autonomic nerves of the gastrointestinal tract. We investigate a novel test using rapid rectal balloon distention, measuring visceral sensitivity and central transmission.

Why is it important?
We report, for the first time in humans, signs of gut hyposensitivity in the early stages of diabetes. The method employed may be useful in evaluating gut autonomic neuropathy.
Perspectives
I find it interesting to try out novel tests in an area that lacks proper examination possibilities, and I find it very interesting to see whether rectal hyposensitivity can be found also in people with earlier onset of diabetes than our present cohort.
