What is it about?

Clinicians (doctors, pediatricians, psychologists, child health centre nurses, speech-language pathologists) who work with young children should be able to identify the children in need of a follow-up due to their weak language skills. Early screening of weak language skills is challenging due to a high variation in the typical language development. This paper compared the usability of the two screening methods (Communication and Symbolic Behavior Scales, Developmental Profile; The Short-Form Versions of the MacArthur Communicative Development Inventories, the Finnish version) which can be used at the age of two years.

Why is it important?

The results showed that both screening methods provided representative information on the language development at two years of age. Both methods identified very well those children with good language development. Their ability to identify children with weak language skills was moderate. Children’s usage of word combinations and parental concern added both relevant information to early screening.

Perspectives

Since both methods focused mostly on the expressive language development at two years of age, this paper lifts up an important note for the clinicians: receptive language development should be assessed in early screening of weak language development. We hope that this paper can be helpful for those clinicians who work with young children.
