What is it about?
This work demonstrates how the spatial distributions of the ionospheric TEC and its temporal variations can be conveniently represented using only a few numbers of orthogonal basis functions. It shows that only 6 numbers of basis functions are enough for typical accuracy.

Why is it important?
It helps in minimizing the ionospheric information dissemination load without sacrificing much in accuracy.
