Why is it important?
Hospital admission can be a 'teachable moment' for patients who smoke. They often present with smoking-related diseases and quitting will improve their health overall.
Perspectives
Many of the myths about smoking surfaced e.g. you are as likely to die from smoking as by being run over by a bus. The actual statistics give the lie to this but it is always interesting to listen to how we justify our behaviours to ourselves and how we struggle to change them even in the face of serious illness. I don't think this just applies to smokers.
