What is it about?

It was a privilege to hear from parents and carers as we adapted this experience of care survey for parents of inpatient children. We were supported by the Australian Commission on Safety and Quality in Health Care to adapt the Australian Hospital Patient Experience Question Set for parents (AHPEQS-Parent). After talking with parents and carers we added questions specific to their own experience.

Why is it important?

The parent survey reflects the unique experience of parents who accompany their inpatient child. The questions align with the original AHPEQS to facilitate consistent reporting of inpatient health care experience. Questions also align with domains of experience of care in the World Health Organisation framework for improving the quality of paediatric care.

Perspectives

A safe base of support is central to wellbeing. There is great potential for parents and children to feel a power imbalance when in hospital. Respectful care, effective communication, and emotional support are key to providing a safe base of care for parents and children.
