What is it about?

The use of readily available citric acid (CA) solution as a crosslinker for cellulosic groups in paper products is proposed here. This cross-linking reaction can improved the mechanical performance of paper products exposed in high humidity. A catalyst for the cross-linking reaction is unnecessary. Under cyclic humidity and static compressive loading, CA-treated corrugated boxes showed a greater than three-fold increase in resistance to compressive creep, showing that CA treatment can be used to extend the lifetime of corrugated boxes used for horticultural produce storage.

Citric acid is readily available and the process is simple, with out the use of catalyst during the cross linking reactions.
