What is it about?

The electric field at the surface of a 1D structure can be estimated as a result of filtration of the magnetic field. Likewise, the magnetic field can be found from the electric field. We investigate the parameters of the corresponding filters and show that the "spatial width" of the filters may be significantly larger than the depth of field penetration into the 1D structure. In addition, we show that effect of spatial averaging of the tangential components of the electromagnetic field acquired at the surface of a laterally heterogeneous earth does not necessarily eliminate the distorting effect of the heterogeneities have on the estimate of the earth impedance.
