What is it about?

Th manuscript describes a gc, specific analytical method for measuring theophylline concentrations in the serum.

Why is it important?

At the time of publication, the only published method used was the Schack and Waxler UV method, which was not specific. Measurements with the UV method did not separate other methyl xanthines such as potential degradants, caffeine and its degradants and possibly other compounds.

Perspectives

The method was developed just as HPLC was emerging as a valuable tool in serum analyses of drugs such as theophylline. The HPLC methods gained much greater favor, acceptance and usage. I never compared the GC and HPLC methodology, but believe that the HPLC was an easier method to utilize than GC.
