However, billions of feeder insects—such as crickets, mealworms, and cockroaches—are bred, shipped, stored, and fed live each year with almost no animal welfare oversight. This review paper argues that the sharp distinction between how we treat vertebrate prey versus insect prey is no longer scientifically justified. Recent research suggests that many common feeder insects possess sentience and the capacity to experience pain or distress. As a result, the author advocates for a precautionary approach to feeder insect care across their entire lifecycle.
