What is it about?

This study used geometric morphometrics to examine cranial variation among 18 Chaetodipus species. I analyzed 69 cranial landmarks from 522 adult museum specimens representing 171 localities, focusing on species differences, evolutionary patterns, allometry, and ecological influences on skull shape.

Why is it important?

Scaled cranial shape distinguished species with high classification accuracy and generally reflected major phylogenetic subclades better than traditional species-group classifications. The results also suggest that allometry and ecology contribute to skull variation, including possible effects of seed size and substrate conditions on feeding and digging-related morphology.

Perspectives

One useful outcome of this study is that cranial morphology provided evidence relevant to both species identification and the broader taxonomy of Chaetodipus. The results support revisiting some traditional groupings, while also showing that formal taxonomic changes should await additional evidence.
