What is it about?
Soil salinity can severely impact okra production by disrupting the metabolic phases during seed germination and limiting seedling establishment. However, seed priming has been shown to mitigate the stress caused by salt. This study aims to identify the optimal pretreatment conditions for promoting seedling establishment in okra (Abelmoschus esculentus (L.) Moench) under salt stress conditions.

Why is it important?
Our findings revealed that NaCl-induced stress conditions had adverse effects on germination, physiological parameters, and the establishment of seedlings in both varieties of okra. Interestingly, regardless of the duration of priming, osmotic pretreatments improved germination parameters and seedling establishment in okra.
Perspectives
Writing this article was a great pleasure as it has co-authors with whom I have had long standing collaborations. The study shows a repressive effect of salt stress on germinalbparameters, physiological parameters, and the development of okra seedlings. Notwithstanding the inhibitory effect of salt stress on the germination of okra seeds and the development of its seedlings, it should be noted from our results that pretreatments with NaCl improve the development of seedlings compared to positive controls.The different positive responses obtained could be due to epigenetic phenomena, which play a determining role in the adaptation of plants to the environment, and based on these findings, other pathways, such as molecular and genetic, should be explored to understand better the expression genes activated during preprocessing or priming processes.
