Why is it important?

Occlusion of the oil producing glands of the eyelids is probably the most common cause of dry eye. However, the complex events that follow this process cannot be easily studied unless one has an animal model of the disease. In addition, it is critical for preclinical drug development.

Perspectives

Because of the various new modalities of treatment available, it is important to have disease models.
