What is it about?

The Aures is a large Berber-speaking region in the eastern part of Algeria, home of the Chaoui people who belong to the Berbers, the autochthonous habitants of North Africa. In this first study, we aimed to analyze the mutational spectrum of BRCA1 and BRCA2 genes in HBOC patients from the Aures region. One of the main objective of our present study is to implement affordable genetic testing in the Aures region.

Why is it important?

One of the strengths of the present study is this report was the first genetic testing for BRCA1 and BRCA2 germline mutations in HBOC patients from the Aures region using PCR- direct Sanger sequencing and NGS with 30 hereditary cancer genes panel or BRCA1/2 genetic test.

Perspectives

The mutational profile knowledge of BRCA genes in HBOC families from the Aures region will contribute to the implementation of cost-effective strategies for the prevention, identification and treatment of hereditary breast and ovarian cancer
