What is it about?

Half-sandwich complexes of ruthenium(II)chloride are ubiquitous especially with cymene as an aromatic ligand. In this publication we have shown how unusual reactions of PPh2Cl can occur in the coordination sphere of Ru.

Why is it important?

One often carries out reactions on half-sandwich complexes assuming no changes in the ligand. This publication suggests that reduction, substitution and oxidation can happen. The reaction appears to be promoted only by mandalol (reduced alcohol from mandelic acid).

Perspectives

The P-Cl bond can be converted to P-H bond easily in the coordination sphere of the metal. P-H is a reactive functionality. However in the coordination sphere of Ru, the molecule is quite stable.
