What is it about?

A new approach for evaluating the wet-adhesive strength of epoxy-based coatings was carried out based on the standardized ASTM/ISO scratch test. The applied critical load to cause coating debonding was experimentally determined. Finite element methods (FEM) modeling was conducted to analyze the stress fields around the scratch tip during scratching. The wet-adhesive strength is then quantitatively determined.

Why is it important?

The integrity of fusion-bonded epoxy coating adhesion on steel substrate is critically important for preventing corrosion and for extending service life of steel pipes. The proposed approach is effective for quantitative assessment of epoxy coating wet-adhesive strength and then for the development of high performance protective coatings for various industrial applications.
