What is it about?

Establishment of genetic transformation of germinating rice seeds so that it does not require to go through long periods in tissue culture conditions. The method is also genotype independent as opposed to the tissue culture method. Genetypr independence is important in order to improve cultivars which may not be tissue-culture responsive

Why is it important?

Saves time and one can genetically transform a wide range of cultivars

Perspectives

Being able to transform rice easily is a landmark, particularly in case of South Asian rice which belong to the sub-group indica and are not sticky.
