What is it about?

We report high seroprevalence of BVD among isolated small holder dairy units. The article also reports possible impact of the disease on fertilty rates. High prevalence even in the absence of PI animals indicate that PI animals are not essential for wide-spread transmssion.

Why is it important?

This is the first field level study of BVD in India. We have also brought to light the health status of subclinically affected animals. The results bring to light a new aspect of epidemiology of BVD in that unlike previously thought, PI animals may not be the major sources of infection in Indian context.

Perspectives

Impact of BVD on fertility of bovines is not yet studied. This disease could be a major reason for the high rates of infertility among cross bred cows in Kerala. Also the source of BVD to theses cows need further research.
