What is it about?

Some key levers in the effective teaching of writing (especially task orientation, direct instruction and self-regulation) are identified through statistical analysis, observation and interview. Illustrations of effective practice from authentic classrooms are also provided.

Why is it important?

Although other researchers have attempted to identify key levers in the effective teaching of writing, our findings arguably strengthen and exemplify theirs because of correlations made between evidence-based teacher practice and student achievement data. In addition, our findings arguably strengthen and exemplify those of others because of their placement within a particular social and cultural context that is arguably different to that in which most previous research has been conducted, namely, a range of diverse upper primary and middle-school New Zealand classrooms.
