Why is it important?

Controlling the transverse spatial purity of the light emitted from a laser diode is important when the light is to be coupled into another object, such as a waveguide or an optical fiber. The design of the surface grating enables changing the wavelength content of the emitted light. Surface gratings are important, because they can simplify the laser diode processing leading to more functioning devices with better characteristics.
