What is it about?
Climatological aspects of dense fog at Urumqi Diwopu International Airport and its impacts on flight on-time performance

Why is it important?
When fog occurs, the air traffic control (ATC) may have to increase the distance between each aircraft landing and takeoff to ensure safe operations, which can cause delays, cancelations or diversions.Studies about dense fog at airports have been widely carried out in consideration of its significant impact on the aviation industry. However, little or no attention to the issue of dense fog at Urumqi Airport has occurred in the field of aviation forecasting, so the topic seems to deserve some recognition.
Perspectives
Flight disruptions during dense fog events can be attributed to many reasons such as inclement weather, ATC activities and airline problems. So, it is not just a problem of dense fog itself. There is a critical need for improving air traffic flow management for ATC. But more importantly, the aviation forecasters of airport should improve the forecast quality of dense fog as much as possible
