What is it about?

We demonstrate that neural progenitor-like cells generated from bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells are not able to proliferate as neurospheres, and they do not differentiate into mature neurons. We performed a small molecule screen and found a chemical cocktail able to convert mesenchymal stem cells directly into mature neurons.

Why is it important?

This findings have important implications to generate neurons directly from mesenchymal stem cells for neural replacement therapies, without passing through a neural progenitor stage.
