What is it about?

To ensure food security it is imperative to produce more rice in South Asia. However, the drought is a major threat to sustainable growth in rice production in South Asia. It is therefore imperative to develop and disseminate drought tolerant rice in South Asia. The present study examined the economic benefits of development and disseminate of a virtual drought tolerant rice in South Asia. Applying IRRI Global Rice Model, this study shows that a new drought-tolerant rice that can provide just a 5% yield gain over the existing drought tolerant variety in South Asia can outweigh the cost of the development and dissemination of new rice in South Asia.

This ex-ante impact assessment is important to understand the benefits of the development and dissemination of the pipeline technologies to ensure food security in the developing world.

Perspectives

I had a very difficult time to fix the IRRI Global Rice Model, as I was exposed to the model first time in 2011. I had difficulty in publishing the paper.
