What is it about?

Thomas Kuhn held that nothing theoretical persists through scientific revolutions. He is wrong. The metaphysical thesis that there is underlying unity in nature is magnificently reaffirmed by all the great theoretical revolutions in physics. This metaphysical thesis acts, indeed, as a kind of persisting paradigm for paradigms for the whole of science - to somewhat misuse Kuhn's terminology. The upshot is a new conception of science: aim-oriented empiricism.

Why is it important?

What emerges from this paper is a new conception of science, a sort of synthesis of the views of Kuhn and Popper, but a great improvement over both.

Perspectives

This paper both pays tribute to Kuhn, but also explains the grave inadequacies in his view of science.
