What is it about?
Aquaporins (AQPs) facilitate water transport across the air space–capillary barrier in the distal lung. Porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus (PRRSV) infection usually causes pulmonary inflammation and edema in sick pig lungs. We have shown that decreased expression of AQPs and Na,K-ATPase in PRRSV-infected pig lungs.

Why is it important?
our results reveal that decreased expression of AQPs and Na,K-ATPase in PRRSV-infected pig lungs, which cause impairment of edema resolution by failed water clearance in sick pig lungs.
Perspectives
Writing this article was a great pleasure as it lead to aquaporins in pig disease contacting me and ultimately to a greater involvement in aquaporins in disease research.
