What is it about?

Sediments at the bottom of urban lakes accumulate pollutants over time, recording the history of human activities in the surrounding area. This study analyzes a sediment core from an urban lake in southern Brazil to assess contamination by 27 trace elements, including heavy metals linked to industrial activities, agriculture, and urban runoff. By reconstructing the pollution history and linking it to land use changes, we identify when and how contamination occurred, providing valuable information for environmental management and remediation.

Why is it important?

Urban lakes are sentinels of environmental change, recording cumulative effects of human activity in their sediments. This study provides a comprehensive contamination baseline and historical reconstruction for a Brazilian urban lake, establishing a scientific foundation for remediation planning and environmental monitoring. The methodology is applicable to urban lakes worldwide facing similar pollution pressures.

Perspectives
