What is it about?

HR is the only functional role with primary responsibility for safe-guarding employee well-being while also helping the organisation to become more productive. At times these goals collide and HR professionals are confronted with ethical dilemmas about 'the right thing to do' in workplace interactions. This paper uncovers the ethical struggles of HR professionals and explores the role emotions play in the experience and resolution of these challenges.

Why is it important?

Our findings demonstrate the central role emotion plays in the nature, experience and resolution of ethical dilemmas in work relationships. We also show how others' expectations about what is ‘right’ can intensify the emotions felt and shape and constrain ethical choices.
