What is it about?

Planning of maintenance activities is important for an organization which has many facilities, machines and equipment. Scheduling of some fault diagnosis tests, to detect what fault has occurred in an inoperative machine, may be one kind of problem, faced by maintenance engineers. We discuss a particular model of such a problem. In the model, diagnosis tests are done one by one, till the fault is detected. The diagnosis times are uncertain (random variables). We suggest methods to get optimized/ satisfactory solutions in such situations.

Why is it important?

The model suggested is a new one and has wide applicability. We give solution methods, which may be used to get good results. Such models need to be discussed more and we have made an attempt toward that.

Perspectives

Scheduling of maintenance activities generally, and in the case of fault diagnosis, is a problem with high practical significance. The article deals with such a problem, gives some solution methods and attempts to create awareness about such issues. It should be relevant, and valuable, to many organizations.
