What is it about?

This article investigates whether immigrant workers raise exports of the administrative areas in which they locate towards their origin countries. Leveraging variation in immigrants location generated by past immigrant enclaves, we do find a pro-trade effect of immigrants in Italy.

Why is it important?

Our findings suggest the immigrants may bring to native firms better knowledge of the foreign markets where they come from and also help with contract enforcement, increasing their export capacity.
