What is it about?

Diabetes is global disorder which affects 537 million people around the world. The most prevalent chronic complications in diabetes are diabetic neuropathies (DN), impacting around 50% of individuals with diabetes. Among these, Distal Symmetric Polyneuropathy (DSPN) and autonomic neuropathies are extensively researched. DSPN, the most common form of DN, results from impairment of peripheral nerve fibers. It is characterized by sensory nerve dysfunction starting distally and progressing proximally, leading to symptoms like numbness, tingling, loss of protective sensation, and impaired balance. Approximately one-third of DSPN patients experience severe neuropathic algesia. DSPN is a major contributor to diabetic foot ulcers, Charcot neuro-arthropathy, and amputation of lower limb. Moreover, diabetes associated autonomic neuropathy presents a wide range of clinical manifestations, including cardiovascular autonomic neuropathy, gastrointestinal disturbance and urinogenital issues like sexual dysfunction in both males and females. Whether occurring independently or in combination, these symptoms are linked to increased risks of severe cardiovascular events, high mortality, compromised psychological balance, and reduced quality of life. It is crucial for individuals with diabetes to be aware of these complications and work closely with healthcare providers to manage and prevent them effectively. Diabetic’s subsequent polyol metabolic disorder, affecting health in different path physiological disorders in a chronic condition; basically due to reduction of keto—enol polyol into Sorbitol.

Why is it important?

In the present article we hypothesized the current status of diabetic neuropathy in the world. The recent pathogenic development of diabetic neuropathy from the genesis of diabetes, and the possible treatments of this complication with conventional and phytochemical substances are also demonstrates. However, this scientometric review further help research to get a detailed pathogenic overview of diabetic neuropathy, which may assist to conduct research on diabetes-associated neuropathic algesia.

Writing this article was a great pleasure as it has co-authors with whom I have had long standing collaborations. This article also lead to rare disease groups contacting me and ultimately to a greater involvement in rare disease research.
