What is it about?

On the basis of preoperative ophthalmologic examination and analysis of preoperative questionnaires regarding the availability of family and/or social Support, we evaluated the suitability for outpatient surgery. 58.2% preferred an inpatient admission. Patients preferring full-admission were older and had worse visual acuity. They were more likely to be female, to live more than one hour away from the hospital , and to have no carer at home.

Why is it important?

Information, education and help for better organisation of after-surgery supply could help to increase the attractiveness of cataract surgery as an outpatient procedure in Austria. Our findings could also aid to generally enhance day case services in medical care.

This study gave very important Information to us before we started with a day care unit at our Hospital.
