What is it about?

Highly mucoid strains of Ensifer meliloti are frequently isolated from the soil and from alfalfa nodules, but the function of the extra exopolysaccharide is unknown. Interestingly, E. meliloti strains are significantly less mucoid. Although in some cases, the reason is due to a mutation in the expR gene. However, this is not aways the case and further studies are needed.
